I have removed the post on cricketer Robin Uthappa’s relocation to Dubai from my Coorg-Kodagu News Facebook page because of the toxic nature of the debate.
The post had garnered over 1000 likes, 438 comments and 24 shares at the last count.
The main reason for pulling out the post was because I do not have the time to moderate the unhealthy debate.
I got the feeling that most of those commenting had not read the full report, but swayed by the headline.
My information is that Robin Uthappa, the hard-hitting batsman, is a decent human being and did not deserved to be targeted. Maybe he erred in saying that he was relocating because Dubai had good schools and was safe for women. Nowhere, he had stated that security for women was an issue in India, nor he had made any reference to Indian schools.
Many of those commenting made two important points. One was that many of the high net-worth individuals (HNI) were migrating to Dubai because of the high taxation in India. The other important point was that Modi government’s policy of polarization of communities was making India an unsafe place.
Personally, I have nothing to gain from the traffic generated from my post because Facebook has blocked my news website after the Modi government introduced digital rules to regulate news portals.
